PREMISE

Ellipsa is the world of the four Seasons. Long time ago there were those who were able to control the powers of the seasons. However, after The Tragedy of Greed the power holders started disappearing until there were only a few left. Due to the disappearance of the power holders, the world started shifting into chaos and many areas were lost to the Darkness. The world became smaller and more dangerous, with earthquakes and other natural catastrophes making their way to the world.

The last remaining power holders decided that something had to be done. If the natives could no longer hold the powers of seasons they had to summon people from other worlds to help instead. So they hatched a plan and started preparing for the rituals.

Unfortunately people from other worlds wouldn't be able to survive just like the natives would. They needed something to keep them from falling apart. That was decided to be "touch". Should otherworlders touch each other regularly they would be able to live fairly normal lives. Any kind of physical contact would work.

And once they'd restore the balance and figured out a way to get natives to adapt to powers again they would be sent home. That was a promise they made. Unless, of course, someone wanted to stay behind.

THE WORLD

The World Before

For as long as anyone remembers, Ellipsa has always been divided into four seasonal segments and the neutral ground in the middle that changed seasons. The first humans to settle into the world inhabited the center of the world and build small, simple village. Once they were settled into the safest zone of the world, they started to explore the different segments for resources.

Through the explorations, the humans who ventured out were blessed by the power of the season they first entered. Not everyone who walked into a segment received powers, but those who did were able to explore the world easier and use their newfound abilities to aid people in various ways. They were named Seasonal Power Holders.

While the exploration of the segments continued, the villages developed over time. Those who did not receive seasonal powers were able to learn more general magic in its place and magical energy filled the world. Villages closest to their respective season formed Guilds to teach new power holders and those who wished to learn magic. They were also in charge of updating the record of flora and fauna of the world and how to use them.

Magic became an everyday occurrence, but at the same time other people worked on honing their technological skills. The village right in the middle of the safe zone became more advanced and offered its technology to other villages to better everyone's lives. Eventually the villages merged their borders and became one city now known as Nightwake.

The Tragedy of Greed

The Tragedy of Greed occurred because of a group of people who thought that controlling only one of the seasons wasn't enough. They found a way to absorb others' season powers, essentially killing them. It seemed to work and one person was able to gather all four seasons onto themselves. A few days later their powers went berserk and they exploded into bubbling lava that destroyed a part of the summer segment.

Eventually everyone else who got more than one power started dying in horrible ways. Some exploded into floods, destroying a part of the autumn segment. Some turned into tornadoes that wrecked havoc in the spring segment. And in the winter segment, there is still an eternal blizzard that formed out of dead power holders, stopping access to the great frozen falls.

Due to imbalance most of the other power holders that weren't involved also passed away, but calmly and without a natural catastrophe to follow. Only four power holders were strong enough to remain untouched. But four would never be enough to maintain the balance of the whole world.

The world became surrounded by the Darkness that almost threatened to swallow everything. The creatures of the world were changed by the darkness and became more dangerous, along with natural catastrophes becoming a regular occurrence in all of the segments.

The World Now

The last remaining power holders managed to do some damage control by erecting a barrier that protects rest of Ellipsa from the approaching Darkness. They also placed a barrier around the city itself that would keep monsters out to protect the citizens.

The city barrier couldn't stop the districts from being affected by the changes in the world. Seasons no longer changed in the middle of the world; instead each district got their fixed season and life in all of the districts had to adapt to that. Technology started to advance to help with the changes, magic started to develop more and new life in Ellipsa started to take shape.

Life couldn't stay this way, however. Eventually the barriers wouldn't hold against the Darkness. The natural catastrophes made it dangerous for anyone without seasonal powers to gather needed resources.

The world needed outside help.

Respecting the seasons

The natives of Ellipsa respect all of the seasons equally. None of the seasons is superior to another and none of them are viewed as "good" or "evil". Power holders are viewed with respect and appreciated for helping with the disasters.

Of course not everyone is thrilled about the new power holders. A group is afraid of The Tragedy of Greed repeating itself. No one has any confirmation which season the power holder who caused the event was so instead of being skeptical of one season they choose to be skeptical about all of them. The group is under watch from the authorities of Ellipsa, but as long as they don't act, they are mostly left on their own.
