Magic & Potions

MAGIC & POTIONS
LOGS | NETWORK | OOC | MEMES | NAVIGATION

Magic in Ellipsa takes form as creating things. Unlike Spring power holders, who can use the simplest of materials for their creations, magic users need all sorts of materials to use their magic. They can also use magic to enhance items that already exist, making them either stronger or adding properties to them (with use of magical herbs or potions). They can never create living things like flora or fauna.

Words need to be used in order to make something out of the needed ingredients. These words sometimes don't even make sense, but they're what make the spells work. The wording should always be positive or neutral for the best result. For example, someone dropped something on their toe in the middle of making an item and a negative enhancement was added to it.

While magic isn't always required to make things, the items made with them will definitely be stronger and last longer. On the other hand if someone was stinky about the quality of materials they might even make something really bad.

Potions are another branch of items made by those who practice magic. They're powerful remedies, poisons and enhancements that have a variety of uses. Like all magic, potions also need words to function and negative energy makes a poison more potent while positiveness makes the remedies work wonders.

Magic can be learned by anyone, but it does require studying in the Magical Manor or Tower of Potions for a few months to properly learn how to use it. After that characters can even learn to make their own potions and enhanced items. Why not even set up their own shop?

Why not study some?

The most basic of potions found from around shops in Ellipsa are:

● Different basic medicine
● Energy potions (for boosting your magical energy)
● Growth potions (for plants)
● Poisons (only the shady shops in alleys)
● Power Boosters (give yourself superhuman strength)
● Sleep Medicine (sleep a dreamless sleep, wake up rested)

Eva's Collection of Magical Things

Name of the Item: Wind Fan
Use: A hand-fan that allows the wielder to enhance the power/accuracy of their magic if it is used as a catalyst. It matches the elemental affinity of the user's Season.
Any restrictions: It can't store magic or be used when the wielder is out of magic, only enhance what's cast through it.
How to acquire: Take a fan or similarly light, handheld item and carve a set of sigils for magic amplification onto the handle. It is more effective with items that hold a narrative or emotional significance to the wielder. Eva's left notes in the Magical Manor on how to recreate it.

Name of the Item: Protection of the Witch
Use: A protective item that, when worn, can be called upon to summon light that distracts an enemy and allow the user to escape. The exact manifestation of the light depends on the user- whether that be a flurry of illusionary golden butterflies, or something more akin to a flash-bang.
Any restrictions: Regardless of the form the light takes, it is an illusion rather than anything solid, so cannot interact with things physically. It usually draws off the user's existing magic.
How to acquire: Take a wearable item (jewellery usually works well for this), and place it in a magic circle baring a protective sigil. Meditate with in to infuse it with your will, until it starts to glow. It is more effective with items that hold a narrative or emotional significance to the wielder. Eva's left notes in the Magical Manor on how to recreate it.

Name of the Item: Key of Truth
Use: An item that, when held out and called upon with the name or description of a person known to the user, it manifests an illusionary version of their form to talk to. This person can be from their past or future, and/or even themselves. They can only speak the truth, but can still avoid questions and be misleading in their words.
Any restrictions: Each cast takes a large amount of magical energy, so it can only be used sparingly- a couple of times a week at most. It cannot manifest anyone currently in Ellipsa, aside from the actual user's past/future self.
How to acquire: Eva's not sure exactly how she got this to work and hasn't yet been able to reproduce it... (As this item is potentially a little overpowered and will just be used for furthering her plot and giving her a bad time, it will be very difficult to reproduce its effects.)

Name of the Spell: Ritual of Eternal Bonding

Effects: Ties the couple's souls together, so that even if they are separated, they will always be able to find one another again even across the universes, life, and death.

Use: A wedding ritual spell adapted and modified from Avalon: Guests gather around a sacred circle made entirely of natural elements found by the couple themselves. The materials for the circle are gathered by the couple together a week before the ceremony and blessed with specific ritual enhancing spells. One item within the circle should be gifted from a close friend or family member, and there should be at least one item representing each form of magic (in this case, all of the seasons).

Once the blessing begins, the couple will stand at the center with their officiant (an otherworlder, preferably one who has been around for a long time and has gathered a lot of magical energy), and all guests will be asked to hold hands in circles outside of the sacred circle. This can be as few or many as you choose, as long as they can complete the circle around the sacred circle.

At this point, the officiant will tie both of their wrists together with a red ribbon dyed with ground crystals and quickly prick them with the tip of a needle through the ribbon. The blood on the ribbon is said to tie their souls together, so that even if they are separated, they will always be able to find one another again even across the universes, life, and death. Guests at this point will focus all of their good feelings and energy directed at the couple in the circle.

The officiant will perform a wedding-specific spell that will call the ribbon off of their wrists and fold it into a rose, which is then enchanted so the crystals solidify and create the couple's wedding rose, which they can keep to take home.

If the couple has the Red String Rings, it will boost the effect of the ritual and make it even easier.

Any restrictions: Takes all the magical energy and almost all of the touch energy to use. Magical energy will take at least a month to reach the point when the ritual can be performed again. Only the officiant will have their magical energy drained.

How to acquire: Speaking with Jean. (He worked on this spell for many, many months before he was satisfied with it to record it anywhere)
