1) Hijikata internally feels more sympathetic towards the mecha program now - the worry for the people who lived out there outweighs the pure scientific curiosity in his book (though learning more about the Darkness is important either way). He asks Dawn about the fairy kingdoms. Avalon has so many different kinds of fae; did Ellipsa always only have the kind that still helps in the library and in the Segments now? (The loss of the library is a pity for sure, but he isn't too distraught over that, unlike some more scholarly otherworlders might likely be).
2) He expresses frustration over the anti-power-holder faction - given that everyone always depended, and still depends, on power holders to get resources from the Segments and temper the elements, what alternative do they propose? Using the mechas? He sort of understands their fear, however, and wearily comments that it was inevitable for such sentiments to radicalise after the Tragedy of Greed.
(Sawyer sure seems like the black sheep among the remaining power holders, but Hijikata is starting to view him as a shitty little brother figure to the others - a bit of a nuisance, but still loved regardless. He keeps that to himself, though!)
