The tongue is too fast for anyone to actually stop it. It came through the door (that opened for the moment) which closes immediately after the tongue is back inside with its prize (Jean).

The horde continues to rage on, even turning to the people who chased the tongue to attack them.

For now the door stays firmly shut. They might have slightly more important things to worry about first.
