The gloves have an effect, making it impossible for the hand to touch Hijikata's hands - so it retreats back to the portal. Only for another set of clawed hands to appear at the edges of the void portal to try and pry it further open.

There's a high pitched scream coming from the portal, capable of temporary (5-10 seconds) paralyzing someone. During that moment the hands will continue to open the portal wider.
