They are wise to be testing their step, as there are some "false" footings. Mostly it's perfectly safe.

After around a full day of traveling (time does not include any breaks they might take or any water monsters they might fight - they're still around, just hidden under the branches) they will encounter an empty forest clearing that's completely dry. It's impossible to see from above, since the tree branches are blocking it.

In the center of the clearing there's a magical circle. It's what the will-o-wisps are pointing at. The atmosphere there is very serene and feel safe.
